Rotary Club of Wuse 2, Abuja, has launched the maiden edition of its sensitization campaign against child sexual abuse.

The campaign tagged ‘Omen: The Scar of Adolescent’, was launched at Government Secondary School, Wuse 2, which coincided with the school’s graduation and prize giving day.

Speaking to newsmen after the event, the President of Rotary Club Wuse 2, Pietro Uzochukwu, said the programme was aimed at sensitising students, parents and guardians on how to safeguard their children from the alarming and growing trend of child sexual abuse.

He said the campaign was to appreciate and contribute to humanity which Rotary is known for, the world over.

Uzochukwu said the programme would be replicated in schools across the six geopolitical zones in the country to raise the consciousness of children, who are mostly the victims of sexual abuse, and their parents.

He expressed optimism that the campaign would go a long way to drive home the intended objective which is to “arm our kids and protect them.”

The highpoint of the event was an award of overseas scholarship by the club to one of the graduating students in the school, Anaelechi Bella, who bagged the best behaved and most outstanding student in academics.

On the scholarship, the Rotary Club president said it felt the need to assist indigent students in the school who were intelligent but don’t have the capacity to pay their fees.

He also appealed to other well-meaning Nigerians to support Rotary Club to collectively impact on more lives, saying that they intended to do more but for lack of resources.

The awardee emerged the best overall in eight subjects – Chemistry, Physics, Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, Biology, Civic Education, Economics, Geography and emerged second best in English and Mathematics.

Meanwhile, eight other indigent students who also distinguished themselves in their academics, received a one-year scholarship which takes effect from the next academic session, while other students smiled home with various awards for being the best in respective subject areas.

Anaelechi expressed happiness for winning the scholarship, and advised other students to be hardworking and dedicated to their studies, adding, “With these they can achieve their dreams.”

In his welcome address, the school’s Principal, Mr Akor Joseph, commended Rotary Club of Wuse 2 for their humanitarian support to the school in the past three years.

“In our present world, different kinds of things are happening. Children are being abused by adults. We are very happy about this programme because it will help to reshape the lives of our students and enlighten them on how to guard against sexual abuse,” he added.
