Row over planned sack of 18 Kaduna varsity staff who joined labour strike

Controversy has trailed a letter purportedly from Kaduna State University (KASU) Management which shortlisted 18 lecturers for dismissal for joining the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warning strike in the state.

Daily Trust obtained the letter said to have been written from the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Tanko, dated 20th May 2021 titled’ NLC strike action in Kaduna containing the shortlisted names of the staff.

In the letter, the management informed the state Governor that it had identified 16 academic staff and two non–academic staff who took part in the strike.

Daily Trust reported that the State Governor had directed the management of the University on 18 May, 2021 to submit names of any staff that joined the strike to the office of Secretary to State Government and to the Commissioner for Education’s office.

Governor Nasir El’rufai in a statement signed by his Media and Communication Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, warned that any staff that does not report to work during the strike would be dismissed.

According to the said letter in circulation on the internet, names of the affected staff have already been forwarded to the office of Head of Service for action.

It was gathered that the letter generated uproar on social media across the state with many condemning the planned sack of the lecturers.

Kaduna State University Academic Staff Union of University (KASU-ASUU) Chapter Chairman, Dr Peter Adamu whose name was the first on the list for dismissal told Daily Trust that they wee yet to receive any disengagement letter from the management.

According to him, he only saw the letter trending on social media like any other person.

” We have not been served any disengagement letter by the management but we are still consulting before we make our position known,” he simply said.

Similarly, The University Public Relations Officer Adamu Bargo disclaimed the letter.

“It is fake news,” he said in a WhatsApp reply when reached for clarification.
