The founding artistic director of Theatre Emissary International, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, has been inducted into the esteemed Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as a member of the RSC College.

Recognised as Canada’s national academy, the RSC comprises distinguished scholars, humanists, scientists, and artists, aiming to promote research excellence in both official languages and advise on public matters.

Dr Jeff Keshen, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Regina, noted that Dr Afolabi’s nomination to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists is evidence of the impact his work has had on socially engaged theatre in Canada and around the world.

He said, “Through his practice as an artist and scholar, Taiwo provides a safe and brave space to share participants’ cultures and stories and to collectively envision a positive shared future.”

In support of Afolabi’s induction, Georgetown University professor Dr Derek Goldman called him one of his most exceptional colleagues in his 25-year career. According to Goldman, Afolabi has the capacity to spearhead the movement of artistic practise towards a more equitable society.
