The winners of the 2019 Georgian Cup, Abuja Rubicon polo team stormed back to reclaim the prestigious title from defending champions El-amin after a 9-6 victory in the just concluded Georgian Cup sponsored by First Bank Nigeria Limited in Kaduna.
Buoyed by star players like Bashir Dantata, Abdulmalik Gbadamosi, Argentine imports Tolito Ocampo and Silvestre Donovan, Abuja Rubicon showed class in all areas of the game beating Mohammed Babangia’s El-El-Amin in a 7-chukkers thriller, watched by polo fans drawn from Kaduna environs and beyond.
The competition which has been sponsored solely by First Bank for 102-years is already on record as the longest of such sole sponsorship in any sporting event.
Reacting to their loss, Mohammed Babangida, whose team, El Amin holds 15-First Bank Georgian Cup titles accepted the loss in the spirit of sportsmanship as he said “In sports, you win some and you lose some”.
Pleased with the attendance at the championship, Shehu Aliyu, who represented the Chief Executive Officer of First Bank at the event, pledged the bank’’s determination to sustain sponsorship.
While thanking First Bank for their dedication to the sport, president of Kaduna Polo Club, Suleiman Abubakar pledged to continue to work hard to maintain the existing relationship between the sponsors and the polo club.
