The Rubochi Development Association (RUDA) in Kuje Area Council, has appealed to the chairman of the council, Abdullahi Suleiman Sabo, to speed up the rebuilding of the houses that were demolished to pave way for the construction of roads within the metropolis of the council.

The President of RUDA, Mr Pada Ibrahim Tukura, who made the appeal at the annual celebration of RUDA day in Rubochi on Thursday, said some residents whose houses were demolished in Kuje some years ago, the authorities are yet to rebuild the houses as promised.

He said most of those that were affected have been squatting with their families at relations and neighbours houses, adding that the victims are worried, especially as the rainy season is setting in in a few months’ time.

According to him, work on some of the rebuilt houses by the council authorities suddenly stopped half way, which he said has posed a serious concern to the affected residents.

“There are some people whose houses were demolished by the ongoing road construction within Kuje metropolis by the council authorities, which the chairman promised to rebuild, but suddenly, work stopped at the lintel level, while nothing has been done for some other people,” he said.

 

He added that “there are some people who are squatting with their families in neighbours’ houses and very soon, the rain may start. We are appealing to the council chairman to speed up the rebuilding and complete those houses before the rainy season so that they can move back to their houses,” he appealed.

 

Also speaking, Comrade Abdullahi A. Galadima, in a paper he presented at the event titled “The Role of Association in Community Development In An Effective Democracy”, said an association plays an economic role through cooperative society where soft loans are offered to community members in order to raise their economic standards of living.

 

He added that an association also played a social role through social responsibility by providing social services such as security, health care service, and electricity among others.

 

On his part, the former president of RUDA, Comrade Joseph Yakwo, noted that Rubochi is one of the communities that has produced prominent civil servants in the FCTA and FCDA over the years.

 

He, however, identified lack of electricity and access to potable water as major challenges facing the community, and appealed to the authorities to assist in addressing them.

 

He commended the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, for the provision of infrastructure, especially rehabilitation of Rubochi township roads.
