A new survey conducted by CampsBay Media and TWOREPORT has revealed that football lovers preferred to watch the just-concluded FIFA World Cup in Russia via the DStv mobile app, ahead of other TV viewing apps.
According to the study, 28 percent of Nigerian football fans will track and consume information relating to the 2018 World Cup through the use of mobile applications on their smart devices.
In the recently released survey, Nigerians expressed their preference for DStv’s mobile viewing app, DStv Now; placing Kwese and StarTimes behind the MultiChoice owned mobile platform.
Respondents to the survey, who were asked to choose any of the three, ranked DStv Now at 59% overall, using pricing, size of app, user interface, content, video and other unique features.
It will be recalled that the DStv Now app was introduced in 2014 to enable viewers watch live programming, enjoy DStv Catch Up and view the TV Guide from their mobile devices on the go.
According to the survey, DStv Now outperformed both Kwese and StarTimes in terms of user interface, layout and design; ranking 60.9%. Kwese TV followed at an incomparable second at 8.7% while StarTimes brought up the rear at 4.3%.
It is the same for video quality where DStv Now came top at an incredible 60.9%, owing to its high definition video content.
And although both DStv Now and Kwese TV are the top apps where the World Cup 2018 was viewed, DStv leads with 87.5% as it offers the most matches and related content. Its innovative pidgin English commentary channel has also proven to be widely popular among the audience.
However, as Kwese and StarTimes’ trump card is low pricing; they narrowly inched forward in terms of price- neck and neck at 29.2% while DStv Now got 20.8%, the survey has shown.
The research, based on an extensive online survey, reveals that while Nigerians ages 18-50+ are still largely consumers of content on TV (96%), 31 per cent, across the age range, view content using their smartphones.
While out-of-home viewing could serve as an indicator of the passion Nigerians have for football, a near 8 in 10 respondents will prefer to watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Russia in their homes. The consumption behaviour of Nigerians during the Mundial is likely to see an increased pay-television subscription as well as a large audience in front of the TV.
“We conducted the research along with our partners at CampsBay Media, with a goal among a few in mind to establish data on the media consumption habits of Nigerians particularly since this is the year of a World Cup," said TWOREPORT Head of Product Innovation and Principal Partner, Telema Davies.
