Russian embassy denies issuing visas to Nigerian sex workers
“The embassy had closely examined recent local media reports regarding Nigerian sex workers in Russia citing the interview allegedly given by the ambassador of Nigeria to Moscow Mr. Assam E. Assam to NAN. The embassy is concerned with information that some Nigerian nationals involved in the sex industry are given visas from the Russian embassy in Abuja. Such an opinion should be dismissed as incorrect and groundless”, an embassy statement said late Monday.
“Combating illegal immigration and sex trafficking is one of the key priorities of the embassy’s consular activities in Nigeria. Russian visa sections, both in Abuja and in Lagos, process visa applications according to the concrete migration regulations. All Nigerian applicants, excluding government officials and diplomats, are subject to a substantive interview with a consular officer and a thorough document checking”, it added. The Nigerian ambassador to Russia had in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria last week said 200 Nigerian sex workers are trafficked to Russia every month.
