Cattle rustlers have shot dead five cows and 10 sheep in Heipang, Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau State barely three days after the Operation Safe Heaven warned leaders of Berom and Fulani communities against rustling and other criminal activities.
The rustlers who were heavily armed, according to Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), also injured six cattle on Sunday evening. MACBAN Secretary in Barkin Ladi who is also the Association’s director in Plateau State, Muhammad Adam Muhammad said the rustlers had targeted the herdsmen but they escaped unharmed.
He said the cows belonged to one Ahmed Ibrahim and that the association had notified Sector 7 command of Operation Safe Heaven who expressed disappointment at the attempt to rustle the cattle and promised to bring the culprits to book.
OPSH Media and Information Officer, Captain Ikedichi Iweha yesterday said the cows were shot by suspected Berom youths but stressed that security agents were waiting for the communities in which the youths belong to, to take action in line with last Thursday’s town hall meeting with the Commander, Major Gen Ude.
