Nigerian teenager, Ruti Olajugbagbe, has emerged winner of the 2018 edition of the British singing competition, The Voice UK, after beating runner up Donel Mangena in the finals on Saturday, April 7th.

The win also earned her £100,000 prize money and a record deal with Republic Records.

The student, from the a resort town, Southend-On-Sea, England, was able to make it to the finals, defeating runner up Donel Mangena. This was, thanks to her coach, Tom Jones who has described her voice as ‘wonderful, magical and sincere.’

Right after the show’s host Emma Willis declared her the winner, Ruti broke down into tears over the shock of being crowned winner.

Before The Voice UK, Ruti performed covers of popular songs on her YouTube channel and created mash-ups as well. She cited the bands Bastille, Artic Monkeys and artiste, Emeli Sande as her main influences.

Her performance of ‘Waiting For A Star’ by Boy Meets Girl at the semi-finals secured her the spot in the finals while her performance of her own song, ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries, secured her spot as the winner. The song has also been released as her debut single.

Ruti resides with her brother Femi and her parents and schools at the Youth Creation Performing Arts School in Stanford-le-Hope, England.
