Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has launched a pilot programme with the acquisition of EVAC+CHAIR emergency evacuation chairs, becoming the first aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to deploy the specialised equipment for passengers with reduced mobility.
The investment is aimed at improving safety, accessibility and service delivery for passengers who require mobility assistance during aircraft boarding, disembarkation and emergency evacuations.
The EVAC+CHAIR, widely recognised as a leading stairway evacuation chair, is designed to safely transport passengers with reduced mobility on stairways using a gravity and friction control system that minimises the need for heavy lifting. Equipped with secure harnesses, durable rubber tracks and an ergonomic design, the chair enables trained personnel to move passengers safely and comfortably while reducing physical strain on operators.
According to SAHCO, the initiative reinforces its commitment to ensuring that passengers, regardless of their physical ability, receive safe, dignified and efficient ground handling services.
Speaking on behalf of the company’s Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adenike Aboderin, said the acquisition reflects SAHCO’s continued investment in world-class services that cater to the needs of all passengers.
She noted that accessible air travel remains a priority for the company, adding that the investment demonstrates SAHCO’s commitment to inclusive service delivery while enhancing safety, operational efficiency and customer experience through the adoption of modern equipment and innovative solutions.
Aboderin also said the acquisition further strengthens SAHCO’s position as a preferred ground handling partner for airlines operating in Nigeria, stressing that the company remains committed to maintaining international best practices across its operations.
The company recalled that in 2025 it became the first aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to acquire the Rapiscan Itemiser 5X, an Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) system recommended by the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for its advanced security screening capabilities.
SAHCO said it has consistently invested in modern ground support equipment, technology, workforce development and internationally recognised safety standards to improve operational efficiency, aircraft turnaround times and passenger experience.
The company also highlighted its nationwide operational footprint, noting that it remains the only aviation ground handling company with operations across all commercially operated airports in Nigeria. According to SAHCO, this nationwide presence enables airline partners to expand their route networks while maintaining consistent standards of safety, efficiency and customer service across the country.
