Sallah: Centre donates clothes, food items to 190 women, children

Over 190 women and their children in Abuja recently received food items and clothes in preparation for Sallah from Azzawaj Women and Children Intervention Center (AWCIC).

Less privileged women and children from Tungan Maje community in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT and the Lepers Colony, Alheri Settlement, in Yangoji, Kwali Area Council, received pieces of wrappers for the Sallah, while Halal Children’s Home (Darul Hubb), a motherless babies’ home in Lugbe, received food items from the centre.

This is part of the centre’s 2018 Ramadan outreach; an initiative AWCIC started this year to provide succour to the destitute and impoverished members of the society.

Founder of the center, Hajiya Asmau Abe Wala, said the period of Ramadan was a generous period and hence the centre in its mandate to help support and care for less privileged women and children provided them with clothes for Sallah.

“As Muslims, we don’t have to wait on anyone to give us reasons to help others. We should just give whenever we see others that lack,” she said.

Some of the women expressed delight at the gesture and were full of appreciation to the centre for coming to their aid at this festive period, saying the gesture was timely.

While presenting the gifts, Hajiya Saadatu Bello, a board member of the centre, prayed that they made judicious use of the gift items.

Zainab Zubairu of the Lepers Colony said she had been worrying about how she was going to get new clothes for her children for the celebration, adding that with the gesture, some of the burden had now been lifted.

“I am very grateful to the founder for the wrappers because it has lifted a huge burden that has been weighing me down. I didn’t want my children to feel left out without new clothes on the Eid day and I didn’t have enough money to buy and sew for them. But with this wrappers now, the burden has been reduced,” she said.

Zainab Zubairu added that, “I can use this wrappers for my female children. Now I only have to think about what to get for my son.”

Also, Ramatu Jibril from Tungan Maje, thanked the centre for the gesture, praying that other NGOs would emulate such.

The District Chief of Tungan Maje, Salihu Ma’annabi Isiaka, prayed that the centre continued its kind gesture and expanded its generosity to more communities in Abuja and beyond.

Likewise, the Chief of the physically challenged in Yangoji, Alhaji Ali Raka, said the gesture was a laudable one given the auspicious period.

He said the centre satisfied the “most pressing need of our people and for that we are most grateful.”
