In 1981 the government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari declared May 1 as Workers Day. Agitation for Workers Day had been on before that year. The Hassan Sumonu-led NLC thanked the government for honouring workers in line with International Labour practices.
As this year’s Workers Day is marked today we salute the Nigerian workers who are the hens that lay the golden eggs.
We salute the past heroes of Labour like the late Michael Imoudu, Hassan Sumonu, Pascal Bafiyau,Adams Oshiomole, Ahmed Gusau and the incumbent Nigeria Labour Congress Preisdent.
We must admit that it is not yet ‘uhuru’ for workers. Many of their entitlements remain unpaid while workers in some sectors work under harsh conditions with poor remunerations.
Their situation became worse when fuel subsidy was removed in 2023. Living standard of an average Nigerian worker has nosedived
Today, cost of living in Nigeria is on the high side. We beseech our governments, at all levels, to improve the living standard of Nigerians through the implementation of policies that enhance human dignity
