Sasakawa Global 2000 urges youths to embrace farming for self-reliance

Prof Sani Ahmed-Miko , County Director, Sasakawa Global 2000, has advised youths, especially the unemployed ones in the country, to embrace farming to be self-reliant.
Ahmed-Miko gave the advice when he visited Community Demonstration farms at Lajangara village, Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe on Friday.
SG 2000 team was in the state to interact with farmers who benefited from the intervention programmes of the agency.
He said that by going into farming, the youths would generate income that would lift their socioeconomic status, instead of sitting idle.
The country director stressed that it was important for unemployed youth to extricate themselves from “dependency syndrome” so as to contribute meaningfully to their communities and national economic growth.
He added that youth engagement in agriculture would boost food production and ensure food security in the country.
The official promised to link the various women farmers groups in the area with the relevant agencies and organisations to enable them get credit facilities.
“We don’t lie in Sasakawa Global 2000, we don’t make promises that we cannot fulfil, we are here for the media to see what we are doing and ask questions about our activities for the people and development partners to know.”
Ahmed-Miko urged those who benefited from the intervention programmes of the agency to ensure that they distribute the improved seeds to other farmers around them to ensure massive production.
Earlier in her remarks, the State Coordinator of SG 2000, Mrs Ruth Yonah said no fewer than 35 extension agents were working with the agency in the state.
According to her, each of the extension officers was working with four farmer cooperative societies.
SG 2000 team had earlier visited community demonstration and model adoption plots at Dumbu and Dadin Kowa villages in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area of the state.
