Vigilantes have arrested a 23-year-old scavenger, Aliyu Gambo, for allegedly stealing a transformer cable in the Unguwar Shadadi area of the Kuje Area Council of the FCT.

Hassan Abdullahi, a member of the vigilante group, said the suspect was arrested by the vigilantes during a patrol on Sunday night.

He explained that the suspect, who resides in the Pasali area, allegedly vandalized a transformer and removed the cable after a power outage, hiding the cable inside a sack.

According to him, the vigilantes became suspicious when they sighted the suspect with a sack trying to board an Okada (motorcycle taxi), which prompted them to order him to surrender the sack for a search.

“It was in the process of searching the sack that the cables were found inside,” he said.

According to Abdullahi, the suspect confessed to the theft during interrogation and led the vigilantes to the transformer site near the Abattoir where the cable was removed. 

The suspect was later handed over to the police, he added.

A police source in the area confirmed the arrest of the scavenger, adding that investigation is still ongoing.
