A scavenger has been found dead in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.

Residents made the discovery on Tuesday around 9pm, with a sack filled with metals beside the corpse.

In a chats with City & Crime, residents said they were shocked by the incident, while others expressed happiness, alleging that scavengers had been stealing their property.

A resident, Tunde Sunday, said he hadn’t seen the scavenger in the area prior to his death.

He said, “We woke up to the news this morning. Nobody knows if it’s a suicide or murder case. This calls for the need to be more careful in our dealings. His remains have been evacuated from the scene.”

Another resident, John Dada, said he wasn’t sad or happy about the news, adding that scavengers had been terrorising the neighbourhood.

Dada said, “These people, who are mostly homeless, roam the streets, vandalising private and public property like generators, building materials, metal of all sorts and plastic drums.”

Narrating how over 20 armed scavengers attacked the area recently, he said, “One night, people came in their numbers; over 25 of them. They robbed at least 11 houses. No police or any law enforcement agency came to intervene. We were left to dance to their music.”

Police in the area could not be reached for comment as at the time of filing this report.
