A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, has sentenced a 21-year-old scavenger, Tahiru Sharif, to 12 months’ imprisonment for being in possession of stolen items.

The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 fine.

Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crime, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other offenders.

Sharif, who pleaded guilty to a one-count charge, begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

The prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had said that one Aliyu Madaki of 1st Avenue, Gwarinpa, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarinpa Police Station on October 10.

Avhioboh said the complainant reported that while he was on patrol with his team of vigilantes, they caught Sharif with one chair and three electric pressing irons.

Avhioboh said during police investigation the convict could not give satisfactory account of how he got the items.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 319 of the penal code. (NAN)
