A suspected scavenger, identified as Oluwasola Adewole, has been nabbed for allegedly stealing a signpost belonging to the Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State.
City & Crime reports that Adewole (25) was apprehended with 47 other suspects accused of committing various crimes in the state, by men of the Amotekun Corps.
Parading the suspect on Monday, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said Adewole was arrested following a tip-off about his nefarious and criminal activities within the state.
Mr Adeleye explained that the suspect, who claimed to be a scavenger, had been terrorising shop owners and also stealing properties erected outside the stores, offices and shops.
He described Adewole as a member of the ‘most wanted syndicate’ that is into burglary.
“He (Adewole) has been into this crime for more than four years but the long arm of the law has caught up with him today. He went ahead to steal a police signpost and has also burgled several houses.
“The gang has been on our watchlist for a very long time because they have been troubling the peace-loving people of the state. So, he would have to join others to face the penalty of his action in court,” he said.
Adeleye listed other suspects arrested by the local security outfit as kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists, drug addicts and others.
According to him, the suspects have confessed to the crimes which they committed across the 18 local government areas of the state.
Mr Adeleye said the Amotekun Corps has also intensified efforts in riding the state of crime with the launching of ‘Operation Save Ground’ which is to tame all forms of crime.
“We have observed that miscreants and criminals operate freely when residents go to their various places of worship on Sundays.
“It was as a result of this that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa gave us the mandate to begin ‘Operation Save Ground’ to curtail the activities of these criminals in the state,” he added.
