The government must pay more than lip service to upgrading infrastructural facilities in schools to improve the quality of basic education in the country, Director of Al-Hikma International Academy, Mararaba, Amb Abdurrazaaq Ahmed, has said.
Ahmed was speaking at the 3rd graduation and speech and prize giving day of the school in Abuja.
He said without basic infrastructure in place, the state of basic education would remain in shambles.
Represented by the principal of the school, Yunus Salawudeen, Ahmed said despite availability of trained personnel on ground, lack of resources and conducive environment would only jeopardize the effort to give quality education to the population, especially those in public schools.
He attributed lack of government support as one of the challenges faced in providing quality education saying, “they make policy without going out to the field to see how such policy would be appropriately implemented.
 “Teachers salary which plays pivotal role to enhance morale of staff to impact knowledge to the children has been played down and as such many schools are on strike and there is going to be retardation in terms of passing information across to the pupils,” he said.
The director also berated the attitude of many children engaging in social media and watching movies at the detriment of their academic pursuits.
