An Ibadan-based school teacher, Romoke Ademoyegun, has asked an Iletuntun customary court in Ibadan to terminate the 11-year-old union between her and her husband, Sunday Ademoyegun, for alleged threats to her life.

In her divorce petition, Romoke accused her husband of frequently subjecting her to violence, which she said had caused her to lose two pregnancies.

“I have endured enough maltreatment in my 11 years of staying with Sunday as a spouse. He was always beating the hell out of me. He was unleashing punches and slaps, and even violently kicked me with his leg not minding whatever would happen to me.

“I once had to move to my father’s home, but Sunday came there to attack me. Series of intervention from my parents have yielded no result on him. Besides, Sunday has no milk of human kindness in him as he does not fend for the needs of the children and I.

“I have been responsible for the payment of the house rent, as well as for the children’s sustenance. My televison set and cell phone are still in his possession because I have moved out of his house.

“As a result of his violence against me, I lost a three- month-old pregnancy in 2015. And recently, in April 2018, I lost another two-and-a-half month pregnancy after he had beaten mercilessly,” Romoke told the court.

Ademoyegun, a movie artiste who did not deny any of the petitioner’s allegations against him, opposed the divorce suit. He only pleaded with the court to settle the matter between him and his spouse.

“I cannot start searching for another wife at this stage. It was never our agreement that we will be parting ways now. Nobody can take care of the children as we will together,” he lamented.

The president of the court, Chief Henry Agbaje, asked the couple to furnish the court with more evidence to substantiate their arguments.

Agbaje adjourned the case till April 23, 2018 for judgment.
