The Kebbi Progressive Youths (KEPYO) has called for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in the state, following public concerns raised by Governor Nasir Idris about the security situation prior to the incident.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi by its spokesperson, Comrade Usman Musa, the group said the governor’s briefing on earlier intelligence relating to the attack warrants a thorough review to understand what transpired and how future occurrences can be prevented.

Governor Idris had stated that the Department of State Services (DSS) provided intelligence indicating that the school was at risk, and recommended an emergency Security Council meeting, which was subsequently convened.

According to the governor, security personnel were deployed to the school after the meeting. He also noted concerns about the conduct and movements of the operatives before the attack, describing the situation as troubling.

KEPYO said the governor’s disclosure underscores the need for clarity about the operational decisions taken and whether protocol was adequately followed.

The group expressed support for the state government’s decision to appoint the DSS director to lead the special committee investigating the incident, saying the move demonstrates confidence in the agency’s capacity to manage sensitive security matters.

KEPYO also aligned with the governor’s position that there is hope that the abducted schoolgirls are alive, expressing optimism that ongoing efforts by both state and federal authorities will lead to their safe return.

“We are calling for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the group said.

The organisation stressed the importance of accountability and openness in security-related matters involving children, noting that public trust depends on clear communication about such incidents.

KEPYO urged the federal government, security agencies, civil society organisations and international partners to continue monitoring developments and supporting rescue efforts.

According to the group, residents of Kebbi State and Nigerians at large are seeking answers, while affected families deserve justice and assurances of improved protection for schoolchildren.
