 A former vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), Professor Iya Abubakar, has urged tertiary institutions to establish a data bank of expelled students.

The records should be kept by the tertiary education regulators.

 Prof Abubakar, who spoke at ABU Alumni Association’s annual public lecture entitled ‘The Relevance of Tertiary Education in Contemporary Nigeria’, said the data bank was for records and reference and to curtail re-admission of such students without proper clearance.

 He also called on the Federal Government to reinstate the Students Loan Board and Education Bank for students to enjoy soft loans to complete their higher education.

 “Provide a robust and sustained scholarship and bursary programmes for the children of the less privileged to enable them access funding for their higher education in and out of the country,” he suggested.

  In his remarks, the vice chancellor of the university, Prof Ibrahim Garba, said the challenges faced by the institution were those of access and quality.

  He said despite being the largest university in terms of structure, ABU Zaria can only accommodate a little over 11,000 students out of 30,000 applicants.
