The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a statement saying that the Annual National School Enrolment Campaign was launched at the Tudun Salmanu primary school, Bauchi and that about 2.8 million pupils would be enlisted nationwide this year.

The statement signed by Director Press and Public Relation, Mrs C. P Ihuoma said  the campaign was meant to increase awareness on the need for parents and stakeholders to send school age children to pre-primary and primary schools for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu represented by the Registrar and Chief Executive of Teachers’ Registration Council (TRCN), Professor Josiah Ajiboye said the educational needs of out-of-school children would be addressed and about 2, 875 000 pupils between the ages of 3 and 6 would be enlisted in schools while 71,875 classrooms would be built annually for four years. More teachers would be employed in anticipation of the increased enrolments.

Malam Adamu said illiteracy was a major factor behind the security challenges being faced by the country and that a meeting would be organised with state governors and other stakeholders to further discuss the menace of out of school children.

Bauchi State Governor, Muhammad Abubakar said that Boko Haram attacks have increased the challenge of out of school children in north-east region and that communities would be adequately mobilised for an effective school enrolment process.
