Science, technology, innovation to drive Nigeria”s economy-Onu

Minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has stated that, Nigeria’s economy must be driven by science, technology and innovation to attain the desired development.

He stated this while speaking at the north east sensitisation workshop on the National Science, Technology and Innovation Road Map 2030.
 
The workshop was organised for the staff of the ministry working in the‎ six states of the region.

He said that the workshop was organised to avail staff of the ministry with the plans of action contained in the roadmap and ways of implementing them.

He informed that the ministry is playing and will co‎ntinue to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey towards real development.

Onu added that science, technology and innovation were now the major drivers of developed and developing economies and Nigeria should not be an exception as it seeks to revolutionised it’s economy.

The minister noted that, Nigeria’s economy had been commodity based since independence as such it needs to shift away and move towards a technology based economy driven by innovation.

He said that the ministry has therefore taken a bold move to promote technology and innovation for the country to realise it’s economic potentials.

He added that the roadmap was designed to produce a short, medium and long term results which he said was different from previous plans. 

In his remark, the director, Science, Technology promotion in the ministry, Mr Ekanem Odo said that they are in the North East to inform people of the region about what the ministry is trying to do through the roadmap.

He said that prepared documents on the roadmap have also been sent to all states, ministries, schools and other stakeholders adding that the roadmap was a products of wide and rigorous consultation.
