The Acting Secretary, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat, Mr Bala Liman, said FCT University of Science and Technology would create new economic opportunities in the area.
Liman stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja while reacting to the Senate’s passage of the university’s Bill recently.
He said that the institution would also give greater opportunities to FCT people to have quality tertiary education.
He stated that the first set of students of the institution would begin academic pursuit next academic session.
According to Liman, it will be a centre of excellence for the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) which are panacea for the development and growth of any nation.
He commended FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, for striking a balance between politics and good governance and for giving governance prominence.
The secretary said Bello gave priority to completing ongoing viable projects that would be of utmost benefit to most Nigerians.
He added that the minister applied bipartisan approach in relating with the Senate in ensuring passage of the university bill, and expressed confidence that same approach would be applied at the House of Representatives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FCT University of Science and Technology is sitting on 500 hectares of land.
The idea of the university was conceived in 2007 and that over the years, several facilities such as hostels and staff quarters and blocks of classrooms had been built.
Others facilities existing at the site preparatory for commencement of academic activities include laboratories and library.
