The new vice chancellor is expected to emerge through a search team constituted for that purpose, a source hinted Daily Trust.
Our correspondent gathered that in line with the tradition of the university, a search team comprising five members has been constituted and has commenced sitting at the new site of the university.
Daily Trust also learnt that the five years’ tenure of Professor Abubakar A. Rasheed who succeeded Professor Attahiru Jega would be elapsing by August this year. Both Rasheed and Jega emerged as VCs of the institution through the same procedure.
The search team is made up of two members of the senate, two from the congregation (a forum of graduate employees of the institution) and a representative of the university’s council.
Sources at the institution told our correspondent that the search team is being chaired by Ambassador Yakubu Kwari, a member of the university council and it has the registrar of the institution, Malam Sani Ibrahim Amin, as secretary.
According to the source, at the end, a congress will be organised where the candidate selected by the search team and all other interested persons would present their manifestoes before election will be conducted.
“The whole idea of the search team is to ensure that the wrong person does not take over the mantle of leadership at the institution and since its introduction, we have been getting good leaders that have advanced our university forward,” he said.
He said the person selected by the search team will compete with other interested candidates.
“One of the requirements for the varsity plum job is that the candidate must be a professor of not less than five years’ standing,” said a source.
