A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, yesterday, sentenced a security guard, Danladi Usman, to three months’ imprisonment for negligence of duty.

Usman of Jabi, Abuja, was convicted after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of negligent conduct.

The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave Usman an option to pay N2,000  fine.

Maiwada said the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the pains of protracted prosecution, by pleading guilty.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that one Mary Amadi of Utako, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on Jan. 15.

Ukagha informed the court that the convict was employed as a security guard to secure an ongoing construction project in Iyase Hotel in Utako, Abuja.

According to Ukagha, the convict formed criminal intention and abandoned his duty post, thereby paving the way for thieves to gain access to the hotel.

The prosecutor said that thieves made away with the hotel property including two water pumps which value was still unknown.

She added that during police investigation, the convict confessed to committing the crime, but could not give satisfactory account of the missing items.

The offence contravened Section 196 of the Penal Code Law.

The convict pleaded with the court for leniency, saying “I am pleading with the court to have mercy on me”. (NAN)
