Sports transcend physical well-being, serving as a powerful force for safer, more prosperous, and peaceful societies through education and global influence.

Recognising this potential, the South East Development Commission (SEDC) has launched the South East Grassroot Recreation Infrastructure Development (SEGRID) Programme to revitalize grassroots sports in Nigeria’s south east region. This initiative aims to leverage sports as a powerful tool for social transformation, economic growth, and the advancement of peace and reconciliation in Alaigbo. The proverb “Igbo bu ihe a na-eme eme” which translates to “Igbo is a lived experience, beyond being an identity it is all about action,” reinforces the value of active engagement and participation, principles that are also central to sports development.

SEGRID is also in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigeria’s sports development, specifically through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy, which aims to shift Nigeria’s sports ecosystem from a competition-driven model to a developmental-driven and value-adding industry.

Investing in sports infrastructure and programmes has been a proven catalyst for economic growth in various regions worldwide. By creating employment opportunities and fostering diverse revenue streams, the sports industry plays a critical role in economic transformation. The SEGRID Programme aims to replicate this success by positioning sports as a key driver of regional development in Nigeria’s south east.

Several countries have leveraged sports investments to boost their economies, create jobs, and attract global attention. The 2010 World Cup was a landmark event that impacted South Africa’s economy. According to the South African government, the tournament contributed approximately $3.6 billion to the country’s GDP. The event created nearly 400,000 jobs across various sectors, including construction, hospitality, and event management.

Incorporating sports development into the development agenda of the south east is essential. Sports can serve as a unifying force, and foster a sense of community. By promoting inclusivity and teamwork, sports can play a pivotal role in peacebuilding efforts within the region. Also, engaging youth in sports provides constructive outlets for energy and ambition, steering them away from social vices and contributing to the overall stability and progress of society. ​

On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the committee members of SEGRID were officially inaugurated. The newly appointed team is composed of a diverse group of professionals from various fields, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the development of grassroots sports and infrastructure in the region.

Committee members include Victor Anichebe, an entrepreneur and football executive with a Master’s in Sporting Directorship and expertise in football club management and business strategy. Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke, a sports journalist and licensed football agent, has extensive experience in media and sports leadership, particularly in women’s football.

Ebelechukwu Emenike, with a background in chemical engineering and sports law, has championed grassroots football development and ethical representation of African athletes through her firm, TBD Sports.

The committee also includes Amobi Ezeaku, CEO of Rangers International FC, who combines legal and managerial expertise to enhance football administration in Nigeria. Aisha Shuaibu, an entrepreneur and sports executive, is known for her leadership in business and advocacy for women and youth empowerment.

Victor Oluwagbemiga Akinmoyo, a sports administrator with over 24 years of experience, leads Island Stars Football Academy and is passionate about youth development and coach education. Lastly, Engr. Dr. Ajah Charles Kanayochukwu, a civil engineer and academic, brings over four decades of experience in infrastructure development, having previously served as the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources in Enugu State. Safe to say, SEGRID is in safe hands.

The south east region boasts a rich history of athletic talent and enthusiasm for various sports. However, inadequate infrastructure and limited investment have hindered the realisation of this potential. The SEGRID Programme aims to address these challenges by developing world-class facilities, training coaches, organising regional tournaments, and establishing partnerships with organisations such as the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the International Olympic Committee, International Basketball Federation and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), among others.

The programme will deploy full-size astroturf pitches and world-class basketball courts in the five federal universities, transforming them into premier sporting centres. Schools will host seven-a-side tournaments, fostering inter-community engagement and youth participation. The initiative seeks to rebuild a sense of community by creating shared spaces for recreation and competition. By nurturing local pride and collective identity, SEGRID can counteract the disconnection caused by social vices like internet fraud and drug trafficking. These efforts are designed to create pathways for local talent to gain international exposure and opportunities. ​

By providing structured and constructive activities, sports can play a crucial role in mitigating youth restiveness and reducing the prevalence of social vices in the region. Engaging young people in sports fosters discipline, teamwork, and a sense of purpose, diverting their attention from negative influences and contributing to cultivating a more peaceful and productive society.​

Also, sports infrastructure investment can catalyse economic growth in south east Nigeria. The sports sector has proven to generate substantial revenue globally; in Africa, it remains underutilized despite its potential to contribute significantly to GDP. By creating jobs in coaching, facility management, and event organization, SEGRID can stimulate local economies. Additionally, attracting investments will further enhance regional prosperity.

The SEDC’s SEGRID Programme represents a visionary approach to leveraging sports for regional development in south east Nigeria. By integrating sports into the development policy, the programme aims to stimulate economic growth, promote social cohesion, and provide the youth with meaningful opportunities.

As the committee members embark on this journey, their collective expertise and dedication hold the promise of ushering in a new era for grassroots sports. With SEGRID, the south east is not just investing in sports; it is investing in a future where youth empowerment, economic prosperity, and social harmony thrive.
