Perhaps, these set of mischief-makers are ignorant of the fact that Senator Usman’s gesture of buying and distribution of cars for constituents predates 2013. The very gesture of empowering constituents with cars and other relief materials not made known to the public actually dates back to 1993 and for the record, it is preposterous that an empowerment programme which started over 20 years ago should now be stopped because a set of mischief-makers did not benefit from the programme.
In just two years at the Senate, Senator Usman has facilitated the drilling of 87 boreholes, secured job opportunities for 31 youths in the senatorial district, awarded scholarship to over 500 students studying in tertiary institutions in the country, embarked on free surgical treatment for over 688 constituents.
No stranger to public office, Senator Usman acknowledged that the Senate mandate handed over to her in April 2011 was a higher calling and so far, has not betrayed the people’s trust and belief in her ability to deliver and bring home democracy dividends.
Far from being a rookie in the chamber, less than a year in the chamber, the Senate Selection Committee headed by Senate President David Mark appointed her Chairman of the Investment Committee.
Senator Usman quickly learnt the ropes and early on, showed bias for women issues. Usman has had to argue passionately in a chamber populated more by men, that, it is better to teach a woman how to fish, because by so doing, you would have succeeded in feeding the whole family rather than give them hand-outs which cannot sustain the whole family in the long run.
On April 7, Senator Usman had cause to draw the attention of the Senate to the incessant attacks on the people of Southern Kaduna; an act she described as “unwarranted” and “dehumanizing.”
Matching words with action, the Senator visited the Agwam Takad where relief materials were distributed to victims of attacks by unknown gunmen in Attakar, Kaura Local Government Area the previous weekend.
Not one to shy away from important national matters, Senator Usman made sure the voice of Kaduna South Senatorial District was heard loud and clear when the Senate debated the scourge of the Boko Haram sect.
She described the actions of the sect as a drain on state resources affecting developmental programmes in Kaduna State, adding that it is unfortunate that innocent lives are being wasted by the sect.
Beyond industry and trade, Senator Esther Usman is also an active member of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC), from where she has consistently defended the interests of the Southern Kaduna people.
Indeed, in October 2012 Senator Usman bemoaned the bombing of a Catholic church in Malali, Kaduna State and wondered why people would allow evil forces gain control of their minds when just some few days prior to that incident, Christians and Muslims had gathered together to celebrate Sallah!
These mischief-makers would do well to know that there are still two years left to deliver on a sacred mandate freely handed over to Senator Usman in April 2011.
