The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointments of Joseph Tegbe as Minister of Power and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

The confirmation followed their screening at plenary, where both nominees were subjected to scrutiny and responded to questions from lawmakers before being cleared by the Committee of the Whole.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, in separate letters, sought the Senate’s approval for the appointments in line with constitutional provisions.

During the screening, lawmakers expressed concern that although Nigeria’s installed electricity generation capacity exceeds 13,000MW, actual supply rarely surpasses 4,500MW due to weak transmission and distribution systems.

In his response, Tegbe assured lawmakers that noticeable improvements would be achieved within a few months.

He said both President Tinubu and Nigerians expect measurable progress, pledging immediate reforms to tackle longstanding challenges in the power sector.

Also, senators urged Ambassador Enikanolaiye to address key issues affecting Nigerians abroad, particularly the killing of Nigerians in South Africa, and to work towards improving Nigeria’s global image.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said attacks on Nigerians abroad and the destruction of their businesses were troubling.

He called for a more proactive and effective foreign policy response to safeguard citizens and restore Nigeria’s influence globally.
