The Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education yesterday agreed to support a legislative proposal requesting future Nigerian presidents to build public libraries at the expiration of their tenures.
This followed a proposal on the subject matter put forward by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) when the committee visited the council in Abuja.
Registrar of the council, Professor Michael Afolabi said “considering the level of development, Nigeria is ripe to enact a Presidential Library Act.”
He said when enacted, the Act will require every president to have a presidential library on the expiration of his tenure of office, adding that presidential libraries and archives will advance understanding of the presidency and the Nigerian experience.
The committee chairman, Sen. Aliyu M. Wamakko, said the committee will support proceedings for enactment of law on presidential libraries. The committee also requested details of the budgetary expenditure and internal revenue generation status of the council.
