Those who benefited from the surgery were selected from the 15 local government areas in Kano Central Senatorial District.
Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, Lado said, the initial plan was to cover only 100 patients from each of the 15 local government areas but the large turn out of people compelled him to increase the number of beneficiaries to 3000.
“Because of endemic poverty in our land, you see people who have been blind for 10 years, other eight years while some six years simply because they could not afford to pay for a simple eye surgery. There was an old man who was blind for 10 years but immediately after the surgery he threw away his walking stick at the hospital”, the lawmaker stated.
The lawmaker disclosed that, only 10 percent of those affected did not undergo any surgical operation as their cases were considered “minor” by doctors.
He revealed that under the programme, each patient was operated upon, given a pair of medical glasses and medications bringing the cost per patient to N22,000 each.
Lado who is the vice chairman of the Senate committee on works said that, the first batch of the surgery covered 1,700 people while another 1,300 benefited from the second.
