Seplat Energy in collaboration with NNPC Exploration & Production Limited (NEPL) has trained 1,373 teachers and Chief Inspectors of Education in Edo and Delta states as part of efforts to boost quality education in its host state.
Seplat Energy’s Director of External Affairs & Social Performance, Chioma Afe, disclosed this yesterday in Benin during the flag-off of the 5th edition of the programme said they were empowered under Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP).
She said the teachers are equipped with essential skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), which has not only enhanced the quality of education but has also ignited creativity and innovation within classrooms.
“Since inception of STEP, Seplat Energy has empowered 1,373 persons, inclusive of 109 Chief Inspectors of Education”.
“This year’s 5th edition, 359 teachers and 22 Chief Inspectors of Education undergo four-day workshop covering leadership, digital skills, STEAM, and essential life skills. The training will be intensive and continues online for a further six months” she said.
She said the participating teachers are provided with a tablet equipped with the STEP app, granting them access to a wealth of teacher-focused resources from Microsoft, as well as ongoing support from facilitators.
Chioma said the initiative is one of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility for its host communities and States.
“Five years ago, we conducted a thorough assessment of our host communities in Edo and Delta states to identify their most pressing needs. Education emerged as the top priority, not only for the children but also for the teachers who are instrumental in shaping the future of the students” she said.
She explained that Seplat seeks to improve the quality of education and teaching in its host states and the country by investing in teachers through STEP programme, adding that the initiative empowers teachers by providing them with resources to support their delivery of quality teaching in host states.
“The programme starts with a four-day residential workshop which provides leadership, self-improvement introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) training and its application to teaching.
Representative of the NNPC Exploration & Production Limited (NEPL) Managing Director Nicolas Foucart represented by , Uzoma Ezulu, said the Programme is one of our key contributions to their hoste communities.
Also speaking, the Edo Commissioner for Education, Dr Joan Oviawe, commended Seplat for investing in human capital development, which she noted was necessary for future development.
Represented by Mr Ojo Akin-Longe, Permanent Secretary, in the ministry, Oviawe said teachers had a role to play in shaping children’s knowledge in STEAM.
On her part, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, Delta State commissioner Ministry of Secondary School, Represented by Mrs Justina Ishaka, said Seplat is not only enhancing the quality of teaching and learning but also shaping the future of Edo and Delta states and Nigeria in
