Could you tell us about yourself?

My name is Doris Dauda, I am from Fct-Abuja, AMAC local government, specifically the Gbagyi tribe, from a family of five. I’m currently doing my Masters in Arts (Sculpture), ABU Zaria.

As a lady in the art world, what does it feel like?

As a lady in Art it is very challenging and at the same time very interesting. The guys would always want to intimidate you, but that has always done the opposite for me. Then people that have not seen my work feel that I am not as good as the guys, and when they get to actually see it they conclude that I did not do it.

What is a typical work day for you?

I have my “quiet time” in the morning, prepare for studio and spend the whole day in the studio. When I come back I cook, watch a movie or read a book and take a rest for the day.

Do you face challenges in sales and promotion of your art?

Yes. Like I mentioned earlier some people do not actually believe a lady can be so good and even when I show them my work they find it hard to believe that I actually made it.

What projects are you currently working on?

My research work titled “Transition of the Gbagyi traditional female”. It is an abstract form of a woman carrying load on her shoulder.

Would you agree that the international market appreciate black art better?

Yes, because Africans have a rich cultural heritage and history.

As a sculptural artist, what are the best methods in creating a great work?

For me the best method in creating a great Art work is first, the birth of a great and a new idea and being able to apply it or execute it out. Many people have great ideas but only few people have been able to execute it. Another method is the availability of the needed materials and financial support to execute it. Being patient, sacrificing time and energy is also very important in creating a great work of Art.
