A former Kano State governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has counselled new media activists in Kano State on the positive use of social media to engender development of the state.

Speaking during a one-day retreat to sensitise members of the Shekarau political movement, the former governor and now serving senator for Kano Central, cautioned all members of his camp to shun elements of violence and immorality in order to leave behind good virtues.

“This has nothing to do with the current political tension in the state. It’s entirely something different,” he said.

Also speaking on ethics, values and basics of the new media, Dr Sule Yau Sule of Bayero University, Kano, urged users to avoid misleading, fake and injurious news, calling on them to observe ethics, security and safety while being online.

Sule, who is also the media consultant to the former governor, added that as social media lacks procedure of gatekeeping, information dissemination becomes volatile and therefore, one needs to be wary of the kind of information they share.
