Editor-in-chief of Blueprint newspaper Malam Ibrahim Sheme has been appointed Director of Media and Publicity of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
He was educated at the University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom and Bayero University Kano where he obtained a M.A. in Journalism Studies in 1994 and Second Class Upper degree in Mass Communication in 1989.
Sheme, an indigene of Katsina State, was three-time editor of Leadership newspaper between 2004 and 2010, rising to become editorial director in 2010. He left the following year to serve as the pioneer editor of Blueprint, and subsequently editor-in-chief in September last year.
Earlier in 2006 he had also worked as editor-in-chief of the now defunct Public Agenda newspaper and was the publisher of Fim, the Hausa movie industry newsmagazine, which was established in 1999.
He began his career at the Rivers state-owned Nigerian Tide newspaper in Port Harcourt.
He was at the Kaduna-based The Reporter as assistant editor between 1990 and 1992. He also edited the Kaduna-based Hotline magazine between 1992 and 1993.
Between 1995 and 1999, he was at the New Nigerian, where he held various positions, including member/secretary of the editorial board, features editor, foreign news editor, arts editor and deputy editor.
In 1999 he became the deputy director of the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation, where he authored the biography of the late Major-General Shehu Musa Yar’adua (rtd).
Sheme is an award-winning novelist and a film-maker. His appointment at the NOUN is with immediate effect.
