Brig. Gen. Gakji Goshwe Shipi (Rtd) has pledged his full support for the successful hosting of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) after being decorated as an ambassador for the prestigious continental women’s golf championship by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN).
The commitment came when the LGAN leadership, led by its President, Dr. Lami Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to Shipi, the Special Adviser on Security and Homeland Safety and Coordinator of Operation Rainbow, in Jos, Plateau State. The delegation also congratulated him on his 60th birthday.
Presenting the ambassadorial recognition, Ahmed praised Shipi’s contributions to national security and his longstanding support for the growth of ladies’ golf in Plateau State and across Nigeria.
She described the AACT as Africa’s flagship women’s golf championship, noting that it would showcase Nigeria on the continental stage while fostering stronger sporting ties among African nations.
“We are here to appreciate your unwavering support for ladies’ golf and seek your partnership in delivering a successful All Africa Challenge Trophy,” Ahmed said.
Ahmed said sports remained a powerful tool for promoting unity, youth development and national pride, urging Shipi to use his influence to mobilise support for the championship.
In his response, Shipi expressed appreciation for the honour and assured the association of his commitment to the tournament.
“I am honoured by this recognition and will support the All Africa Challenge Trophy in every way I can,” he said.
He noted that sports remained one of the country’s strongest unifying forces despite prevailing security challenges.
“While insecurity often dominates the headlines, sports continue to unite our people and project Nigeria positively to the international community,” he said.
Shipi also promised to engage the Plateau State Government on possible support for the championship.
During the visit, LGAN presented him with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his contributions to sports development and national unity. Ahmed said the honour formed part of the association’s nationwide campaign to mobilise support ahead of the championship, which Nigeria will host in Abuja from November 2 to 7.
More than 30 African countries are expected to participate in the biennial tournament, which LGAN believes will boost tourism, encourage youth participation in golf and strengthen Nigeria’s reputation as a leading golf destination on the continent.
