Before the event kicked off, arts enthusiasts who had thronged the center were admiring the paintings, jewelries and other items on display,  before the beginning of the  main event of  the evening; reading from The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives by its author, Lola Shoneyin.

Then came the main event of the evening. Shoneyin held the audience spell bound with her dramatic readings from the novel. Waves of applause greeted her readings from the book.

During the interactive session Shoneyin identified Nobel Laurete Tony Morrison as her muse. On how to approach rejection from publishers, the author who had had two novels rejected, advised aspiring writers to  seek for distraction in other things, forget about the disappointment and forge ahead .

The reading which was jointly organized by the French Cultural Center and Cassava Republic Press drew several literary enthusiasts including the Tunisian Ambassador to Nigeria.

The event also showcased works of painters, Millicent Osumuo and Tyna Adebowale and Nafisatu Lami Abubakar.

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives is Shoneyin’s first novel.
