On Peace Corps and extra-mandate activities
My attention was drawn to the recent arrest of members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria for operating outside the mandate and purpose of its registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). It is true that the National Assembly recently passed a bill on the Corps, but I do not agree with the posture some of the members have assumed in recent times. It is funny to see the members already parading themselves as military combatants or security agents, forgetting that is a mere voluntary, Non-governmental Organisation. The lure of uniform among some youths had led them to think they were already at par with the police or military officers. A stitch in time saves nine. While that might not be the intention of the National Commandant, Dickson Akor, the activities of the members should be curtailed in time. Again, there is no basis for collecting N40,000 from every Dick and Harry for automatic recruitment. Kudos to the army, police and DSS for the raid, but please, release them with a stern warning.

Economic recession and family peace
I wish to appeal to all housewives to learn to reduce their financial demands and expectations from their husbands at this period of economic recession. No one needs to be told of how costly prices of commodities have risen with reduced incomes and sacks in several offices. Good women should at times like this understand with their husbands and curtail their tastes and demands to allow peace to reign in families.

Soft-pedal on yam export
I understand that some Nigerian states will soon start exporting yams to China, Europe and North America. While this is economically a wise decision in line with the economic diversification policy of the federal government, I wish to caution that we do it with care and the well-being of our people in mind, because, very soon, Benue, a major yam producer, may join, with other states, causing a drop in domestic supply with attendant rise in prices. The government should quickly regulate this new-found export to ensure that we do not end up feeding others abroad and going hungry at home.
