FG’s recruitment of 500 teachers: About time!
When I read in the pages of your newspaper about the planned employment of 5,000 teachers by the federal government, I was over the moon. Only a government that has a heart and is humane will come up with such a development. The only thing that needs to be done, however, is a thorough screening to select them. Five thousand is a huge number, and we should remember that when it comes to teachers, as everything else, quality trumps quantity.

Why should anyone attack another for not fasting?
Ramadan is supposed to be a period of sober reflection, yet a group of youth decide to attack an innocent non-Muslim because he is not fasting. This is really disgusting. They definitely need to take a look at their lives. I think those responsible should be brought to book and made an example of. If God had wanted, he would have made every one of us the same, with the same beliefs.

A substitute for oil
We need to be serious about agriculture. How much are we investing in it? Not as much as is required. Governments have a habit of harping about how important it is without doing anything tangible about the situation. We must go back to the days when we were exporting cotton and other agricultural products. Farming should not just be a means to an end. It is important that Nigeria can close its borders and survive without food imports. Perhaps Abacha’s time is an example?

On made-in-Nigeria goods
Nigerians are encouraged, verbally, to produce locally, yet there is little encouragement. We hear of one invention or the other, but eventually, nothing becomes of it. In other countries, once someone produces something the country feels will be of benefit to its economy, he or she is supported to the point of export. Here in Nigeria, we pay no attention to our ‘genius’ and let them go abroad where they get the required boost. The government must devise a means of encouraging small-scale business owners in order to boost local production .
