When I picked up last week’s edition of the Daily Trust on Saturday, I knew I would get my money’s worth. What I didn’t know is that I would get far more than that. The inventively-titled story ‘How Lawyers ‘Invaded’ Buhari’s Ministerial List’ was interesting and shed light on an angle I didn’t notice until the morning when I picked up my copy. What I’m talking about is the way lawyers seem favoured in President Buhari’s new cabinet. I also enjoyed the profile which followed, as they were smartly written. I agree with the story, which seemed to celebrate lawyers and legal practice in general. Thank you, again.

Still on lawyers ‘invasion’
I think I probably noticed a couple of lawyers on President Buhari’s new cabinet and I remember making a mental note to myself to keep an eye on any more. So, when I saw the Daily Trust headline in Saturday, I had an ‘Eureka!’ moment and even the vendor looked at me cautiously, probably in doubt of my sanity. I think the development is good, and also an indicator of where the president is headed with this country. Lawyers are fully aware of the law, so who better to handle the affairs of the country than legally-aware professionals? While I’m in law enforcement, I support this idea fully, even if the presidential media team’s spin claims it is coincidence. Sweet coincidence, actually.

Sparing thoughts for the Chibok girls
Many things come to mind whenever I glance at the Chibok kidnapping counter on the cover of Daily Trust. I ask myself the following questions: Who caters for their daily needs (food, shelter, clothing et cetera)? Are they still alive? How are there parents feeling without them? When and how will they be rescued? Even though I always include them in prayers day and night, I see the kidnap as a conspiracy that needs to be blown open for Nigerians to see and judge. Also, I crave for reliable information on their present condition, and if any individual or organisation is privy to that, they should please share with us heartbroken Nigerians.

To Buhari, a plea on behalf of retirees
Nigerian retirees are counting their days to the grave, courtesy of government-imposed poverty. The contributory pension scheme and the regulatory body is announcing huge accumulated funds, yet pensioners who retired six months and more ago are yet to access any of their benefits. The National Housing Funds Scheme is denying contributors housing loans and continues to withhold contributions made by retirees. The government armtwists workers to contribute, yet look the other way when mortgage banks refuse to refund contributors who have retired.

A look at Buhari’s brand-new ministers
The ministerial nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari, to me, are very impressive, leaving fault-finders with little or nothing significant to criticize. It is a good decision that he carries along the key politicians or prominent individuals that contributed to his success at the polls. It is also commendable that he involved new faces. I find myself agreeing with one political analyst who wrote thus: “…unless Nigerians would prefer PMB to use foreigners instead, we can’t have it better.”
