National Deputy Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Lawal Shuaibu yesterday said Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo remained the best candidate for the party for this year’s governorship election in the state.

He stated this when he resumed at the party’s secretariat yesterday after his suspension was lifted. The suspension was lifted at the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held on Tuesday. Oshiomhole and Obaseki have been at daggers drawn with the party national chairman said to be against the second term ambition of the governor.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the Edo governorship election for September 19 this year.

Shuaibu, who also claimed he was not suspended, however, said he had keyed into the ongoing reconciliation moves of the party.

Asked if the war was over, Shuaibu said to him there was never any war, adding that his letter to Oshiomhole was not personal as he was not fighting him but advising him.

“For someone to tell me that I have been forgiven; forgiven for what? It doesn’t make any sense because nobody suspended me. It was just hype but I don’t want to continue the fight and that was why I kept quiet.

“There is nothing one can do when an olive branch is extended to you otherwise you will be vilified. I am old in this game and we know how to reform the party if only they can listen to us. I am not the chairman, he is but if we offer advice and he does not take it what can we do?

“Let me say something. Surprisingly, Comrade Adams is my friend, he has been my old friend but just all of a sudden something went wrong and I said I can’t sit down here when the house is collapsing and without telling the world that I am not part of it.

“Were you here when the president attended the last NEC meeting what did he say? He said any governor who has performed deserves a second term all over the world, even in America where democracy started. Trump has no opposition, nobody has contested against him, so Obaseki is the strongest candidate we have in Edo State,” he said.

With Oshiomhole, APC will fizzle out before 2023 – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said APC would soon collapse with the return of Oshiomhole.

It said in a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, that the ruling party is a fizzling political platform facing “inevitable” extinction.

The party lampooned Oshiomhole for his alleged failed attempt to divert public attention from the “rot in his party by blaming the PDP and respected Nigerians for the self-inflicted infighting in the APC, for which he is largely responsible.”

The PDP said, “It is therefore instructive for Oshiomhole to note that the PDP is too busy to be interested in the APC or engage itself in any brickbat with a failed political party whose end has come.

“APC can no longer beguile Nigerians as they have since come to know that it is nothing but a power grabbing vehicle designed to fleece our nation and subjugate the citizens.

“Mr. Oshiomhole should thus concentrate on his role as the undertaker of the APC until he buries the ashes of his fizzling party and save Nigerians the trauma of suffering which the APC has come to represent, instead of dabbling into the activities of our great party.”

Contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC,  Lanre Issa Onilu, said they are not interested in what the PDP said about Oshiomhole.
