The vice chancellor, who spoke during an orientation course held for fresh students of the university said, “Beware of cultists that would come in guise of fellowship, offering to assist you in registration.
You ought to identify with one genuine church or fellowship, so as to worship God.”
Ogbuagu, represented by his deputy, Professor E.A. Udensi, congratulated the freshmen for making it into Abia State University, urging them to be disciplined and focused.
He observed that in his four-year stay at the university, that was the first time fresh students were turning up en masse for their orientation course.
The orientation course was divided into nine lectures which gave resource personnel the chance to enlighten the freshmen on various issues.
The President of Abia State University Women Association, Lady Professor Stella Ogbuagu, while presenting a paper titled: “The female undergraduate on campus,’’ noted the challenges facing female students on campus and the way forward.
She identified fashion syndrome as one of the problems facing most students, noting that some group of students, especially female students on campus, would spend their money on the latest fashion in town and forget the reason they came to school.
Ogbuagu urged the students to aim for academic success, saying that is the aspiration of both parents and the society.
The acting Librarian, Mr. M.C. Onwubiko, speaking on the use of library, told the students to befriend the library, stressing that one could benefit a lot using the library.
He said it was common for students not to visit the library but prefer reading in places that are devoid of noise.
“It is good to read in such places and also bad, because one cannot get the necessary materials required to study a particular course, if one does not visit the library,” he said.
