The FCT police command has arrested two sisters and their accomplices for allegedly faking a kidnapping and demanding a N5 million ransom from their father.
FCT Police Commissioner, Saka Ajao Adewale, disclosed this to journalists at the command’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
The arrests, he said, followed a report from the father, identified as Innocent, a resident of Jikwoyi Phase II, Abuja.
According to the Commissioner, Mr. Innocent reported to the Jikwoyi Police Division that his 16-year-old daughter, Lead Way Innocent, left home on July 18, 2025, to write an examination at Government Secondary School (GSS), Karu but never returned.
The CP said he subsequently received a phone call from unknown persons demanding a ransom for her release.
According to him, upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Jikwoyi division immediately launched a discreet investigation using intelligence gathering and digital tracking. The phone number used to contact the father was traced to a residence in Jikwoyi Phase II.
The CP added that the police operatives proceeded to the location and found the supposedly abducted girl, Lead Way Innocent, in the company of Mrs. Tina Mayowa, the wife of Mr. Mayowa Adedeji eating and conversing freely, showing no signs of distress.
The CP added that subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Joy Innocent, the supposed victim’s elder sister and her boyfriend, Mr. Mayowa Adedeji.
The police revealed that Joy conspired with her boyfriend, who is married to Mrs. Tina Mayowa, to fake the kidnapping of her younger sister in order to defraud their father of N5 million.
The CP said it was further uncovered that Lead Way Innocent was not only aware of the plan but was an active participant in the staged kidnapping, willingly staying with the suspects throughout the period.
He said while the plot unfolded, Joy stayed at home, feigning ignorance and watching her parents’ anguish as they struggled to raise the ransom money.
The CP said all the four suspects are currently in police custody and have voluntarily confessed to the crime, adding that they will be charged in court.
The CP condemned the act of betrayal and manipulation, especially one perpetrated within a family.
He urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children’s emotional well-being and behavioural patterns.
Adewale warned that any attempt to exploit family ties for criminal purposes will not be tolerated and will be met with the full weight of the law.
