At a reception held last Saturday in her honour by her parents, she said: “My highest point was when I heard my name called as the first runner up, it was unreal but real at the same time. I also felt very happy when Tuface came and I had to sing his song that weekend. Knowing fully well that my rehearsals for the song were bad.”
She added that: “But after I performed it and he commented that he loved it that was amazing an also one of my highest points.”
Speaking on not emerging the winner, she said: “After being in the Academy for the length of the competition and in the midst of other very talented singers, we were all groomed to accept the fact that we are all winners.
“Especially for the final eight, we all felt like winners. Not being the winner did not mean I was not a winner. I felt very honoured, humbled and grateful with what I had gained so far.”
Senator Jonathan Zwingina, who chaired the event which also honoured another finalist, Debbie Olotu, at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotels and Towers, urged parents to encourage their wards to develop their talents, noting that it was important to assist them to discover and grow their natural potentials.
“Parents are the most essential part of developing, discovering and nurturing any talent in their children.There were times in the past when parents determined children’s choice of career. If it were then, Debbie and Ruky may not have this opportunity. Those times are gone. This is a time that parents should encourage their wards,” Zwingina said.
“It’s a wonderful discovery for the girls. It is a great display of exceptional inborn talent. Discovery of talent is one thing that human beings can achieve in life. When you can’t discover your talent, you only sojourn for a long time without any meaningful result,” he added.
Her parents, Engr. Jude and Gloria Olotu, said the girls had basic foundation to excel in life and urged them to use the platform to influence their generation.He said many young people develop their artistic careers in protest.
He also acknowledged the first runner-up, Idol West Africa, as having been one of the most prominent participants of the reality show even though she did not win.
Music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, also noted that the celebrants’ foundation were properly built and supported by their parents.
She expressed joy that families support any talent their children wish to develop and pursue as a career, a departure from her own time when a career in the entertainment industry was regarded as an abomination.
Gloria Olotu, said she started gaining confidence in her daughter, Ruky, when she was picked as a finalist for the show and felt extremely proud when she emerged the first runner-up.
On his part, PMAN governor FCT chapter, Mr. Collin Adeyemi, stated that music could be used to promote peace in the society.
“PMAN is an umbrella body that will take care of packaging and looking after young artistes like Ruky and Debbie,” he said.
