The stage is set for the filming and production of the Nigerian version of the world-acclaimed musical ‘Sister Act’ later this year.
The production of the movie – which will parade an all-Nigerian cast, began with a three-day workshop in Lagos from Thursday and ends on Monday.
Considered to be one of the most successful musical theatre productions of all time, Dr. Soji Akinkugbe who is the brain behind its Nigerian production, said  it will be done in collaboration with top executives of the Waterfront Theatre Company Cape Town, South Africa.
‘Sister Act’ is a 1992 movie based on the story of an aspiring disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, who after witnessing her gangster (and married) boyfriend commit a murder, ends up in hiding in a convent whose parish had fallen on hard times. Though the sequin-free lifestyle doesn’t agree with her, Deloris finds her calling, working with the choir, and breathes new life into the dusty convent while discovering a sisterhood she never had before.
The production of ‘Sister Act’ which is scheduled to take place at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, later in the year will be done in collaboration with one of the doyennes of South African Theatre, Delia Sainsbury, and her business partner Paul Griffiths.
Akinkugbe, whose vision is one step closer to realisation, says he believes strongly in the talents of Nigerians to realise a world-class production of the play.
