Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, an aspirant for the Enugu West Senatorial seat, and a lifelong advocate for electoral integrity, has called on the National Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, to intervene and ensure the party’s candidate selection process complies with the Electoral Act 2026.

In an open letter dated 11 June 2026, after watching a nationally televised interview on Arise TV in which the NDC National leader vowed to adhere to the electoral laws, Ogbonnia said neither a valid primary nor a legal consensus has been held in many constituencies in Enugu, including the Enugu West Senatorial District.

He noted that while a primary was scheduled and his supporters turned out in large numbers, the election did not finally take place, the party has yet to finalize the process of selecting candidates.

Dr. Ogbonnia also reminded Sen. Dickson that there has not been any attempt to organize the alternative which is consensus as stipulated in the electoral act.

Ogbonnia described himself as the leading aspirant based on social, economic, political, and intellectual standing, and said his viability has been acknowledged by State Party Leader Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo and Senatorial Zonal Leader, Prof. Udenta Udenta.

Citing Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2026, he stressed that candidates must emerge through democratically conducted primaries or through a consensus validated by signed written agreements from all aspirants.

With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for candidate submission approaching, he warned that submitting any name without due process, including his own, would invalidate the nomination.

Ogbonnia said he has sent multiple petitions to the party that have gone unanswered.

He warned that proceeding without a legally sound process could trigger an electoral crisis and expose the party to litigation and disqualification by opponents.

He urged Dickson to act immediately to rectify the situation through due process before the INEC window closes.
