Next week, the 22-year-old, born in Maryland to a Nigerian-Sierra Leonean family, will face a double challenge in the 2015 NBA All-Star weekend.
Oladipo, known for his athleticism and ferocity to attack the basket, will face Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Zach LaVine, and the Brooklyn Nets’ Mason Plumlee in the highly-anticipated Slam Dunk Contest, once described by Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins – the winner of two Dunk Contests in mid 1980’s – as the signature event of the All-Star weekend.
For the 6-foot-4 guard who has flashed some impressive dunks in his still young NBA career, it is a matter of time.
“It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be unique. I am looking forward to be part of the history,” he said.
“I always dreamed about being in it (NBA slam dunk contest) ever since I was little.
When asked how he was going to approach the contest in the attempt to win it, Oladipo was outright:
“Right now, I am just trying to get some dunks ready with in some practice sessions.”
A closer look at Oladipo’s dunk history, and it seems that sky is the limit for him.
In his freshman year at Indiana University in 2010, Oladipo introduced himself to the basketball world by sending fans into frenzy with acrobatic dunks, before scooping the contest trophy.
College basketball aside, four-time MVP LeBron James doesn’t get dunked very often, but young Oladipo showed no fear on Boxing Day, posterising the “King”.
This tremendous 360 dunk against the Houston Rockets last month sums up Oladipo athleticism.
Even though the No 2 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft was not even born when Michael Jordan and Wilkins performed one of the greatest Slam Dunk contest in the NBA history in 1988, Oladipo described it as one of his all-time favourite dunk contest along with Vince Carter’s 2000 Slam Dunk excellence.
Meanwhile, fans from across the globe will have a chance to watch Oladipo feature in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge, a contest involving a selection of talented first and second-year USA players taking on a World select side in Brooklyn, as part of 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend.
The USA team counts with prolific scorers such as 2013 Rookie of The Year winner Philadelphia 76ers Michael Carter-Williams, who averages 15 points and 7.4 assists per game. Utah Jazz guard Trey Burke and Charlotte Hornets Cody Zeller, who teamed up with Oladipo at Indiana University, could make significant for the “hosts.”
The game could go either way, and Oladipo, the highest scorer in the USA roster, is expected to live up to his on-court leader reputation.
Oladipo has improved his scoring average from 13.8 points in his first season to 16.8 points this season, and has scored more than 20 points 11 times and finished with 30 plus points twice on two occasions.
