A female vigilante leader, Mrs. Blessing Tawa Samson, who was killed by suspected gunmen, was buried amid tears in Butura Kampani, Butura District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Daily Trust had reported that the deceased was shot dead on August 26 alongside a woman while returning on a motorcycle from a mining site operation in Butura Kampani.

The motorcycle rider was also injured during the attack.

Sebastian Magit, Chairman of the Butura Youth Movement, described the killing as devastating, given her significant contributions to peace in the area. Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, he said Blessing was buried after professional hunters paid their last respects before she was laid in the grave.

“Blessing was a devoted vigilante leader who tirelessly fought against drug abuse and worked to promote community safety,” the chairman said.

He added, “Her efforts led to increased discipline and participation among the youth, contributing significantly to peace in our communities. Tawa not only dedicated her time and energy but also invested her resources, inspiring her family to join her efforts.”

According to the chairman, the deceased had been targeted even before her death.

“This attack on Tawa was not a coincidence. On July 28, her son Miracle was shot in the leg while standing guard with other volunteers in Butura Kampani. It’s obvious that vigilantes have become targets of these attackers.”

“We urge our community members to remain vigilant and not be deterred by the challenges we face.

“May God provide comfort to the bereaved families and grant peace to the entire Butura district,” he prayed.
