The assertion was made in a communiqué issued at the end of the 44th annual conference of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) held in Owerri, Imo State with the theme Land Use Planning and National Security.
The communiqué stated that while there is close relationship between land use planning and national security, including housing and education, inadequate collaboration between security and physical planning agencies impedes harnessing of available data to fight crime.
Town planners also called on the federal government to provide digital maps for effective physical planning and crime prevention and also called on state governments to domesticate and implement the 1992 Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Law.
National President of NITP Steve Onu lamented that despite all the contributions of town planners in the design and development of human settlements in Nigeria none has ever been accorded national recognition through the annual merit awards.
The National President of the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC), Prof. Layi Egunjobi said after assessing the degradation human beings have found themselves, coupled with the attendant security challenges, urged government to carry out strategic policies and programmes to handle them, stressing the need for the implementers to take note of the global best practices.
NITP awarded honourary fellowship to the governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Chairman of TET Fund Board, Dr. Musa Babayo.
