African cybersecurity and compliance technology company Smartcomply has joined the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) as an Associate Participating Organization, becoming one of the first Nigerian firms in its category to contribute to the development of global payment data security standards.
The company announced the development in a statement on Thursday, saying the membership would enable it to participate in the Council’s standards development process and collaborate with industry stakeholders on payment security initiatives.
The PCI Security Standards Council is a global body that develops and promotes data security standards aimed at protecting payment systems and preventing cyberattacks and data breaches. The organisation brings together hundreds of participating companies from more than 60 countries, including payment networks, financial institutions and technology providers.
Smartcomply said its participation would provide an opportunity to contribute African market perspectives to discussions on payment security standards and compliance frameworks.
Chief Executive Officer of Smartcomply, Gbemisola Osunrinde, described the development as a significant milestone for the company, noting that collaboration on payment security standards is becoming increasingly important as digital payments continue to expand.
According to the company, its platforms support financial institutions in areas such as anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC) compliance, fraud detection, governance, risk management and cybersecurity automation.
Commenting on the development, Executive Director of the PCI Security Standards Council, Gina Gobeyn, said Associate Participating Organizations play a role in promoting awareness and adoption of PCI security standards while contributing to efforts aimed at improving payment security globally.
Smartcomply said its admission into the Council follows other developments in 2026, including its recognition as a verified member of the Mastercard Engage Partner Program and its expansion into the United Kingdom.
The company stated that it currently serves businesses across regulated sectors in Nigeria, Kenya and the United Kingdom.
